Introducing our first Deaf characters into now>press>play Experiences

At now>press>play we reach over 150,000 children and so it’s vitally important that our stories represent the broad diversity of the world we live in. We’re excited to say that this year we have two Experiences coming out which both feature a Deaf character, acted by David Ellington and written in consultation with Remark!.

In EYFS We Are All Different, we visit our friend Jaden in order to make a dinosaur drawing for a surprise birthday party, while in KS1 Oceans and Seas (coming in Summer 2024) we meet Professor Seta, a marine biologist who helps us out of a sticky situation in the middle of the Atlantic.

Available now on the now>press>play app.
Coming in Summer 2024.

Both Jaden and Professor Seta communicate with us in British Sign Language (BSL). In order to be able to respond to them in BSL, we’ve included a video with the resources to show to the children before the Experience.

The actor in the video is David Ellington, who plays both Jaden and Professor Seta. David is an award-winning, Bristol-based creative working in short films, film and TV drama. He enjoys working as a Deaf consultant across arts/theatre organisations such as Watershed, Ad Infinitum, and Flarewave Festival.

“The project was interesting and informative. Improving people’s literacy in BSL is critical because it allows Deaf children in educational settings to feel more comfortable and included. This is the main thing I like to see: Deaf pupils flourishing and playing.“

We hope you found this useful and we look forward to hearing your feedback on our new Experiences. If you would like to find out more about the benefits of now>press>play, you can book your 2-week free trial and speak to a member of our team.
