When your father has an accident down the mine, your family has to go into the workhouse. You decide to stowaway on a train to London to make your fortune and free your family. But how will you, a child on their own, survive the big smoke?


In this Experience, your class will learn about:

  • The Industrial Revolution: mines, factories, railways – and the role of children
  • Social & economic inequality (including the workhouse), and industrial action
  • Life in Victorian countryside versus the city
  • The Prime Minister William Gladstone who brought in many reforms
