When your father has an accident down at the mine, your family has to go into the workhouse. You decide to stowaway to London to make your fortune and free your family. But how will you, a child on their own, survive the Big Smoke?


In this Experience, your class will:

  • Work down the mines digging for coal
  • See their family forced into the workhouse
  • Negotiate filthy and crime ridden London
  • Get a job in a factory and start a strike over the harsh working conditions
  • Head up a protest outside Parliament and persuade the Prime Minister Gladstone to protect workers’ rights
